Abilene police seek phone records of man accused of killing ex-girlfriend's mom

Michael Eugene Shubert and Debra Jean Helgerson

By Jamie Burch & Natalie Martinez/KTXS News ABILENE, Texas - Abilene police have obtained a search warrant for the cell phone records of Michael Eugene Shubert, the 38-year-old man indicted for capital murder in the death of his ex-girlfriend's mother.

The warrant, signed Tuesday by Judge Thomas Wheeler, seeks call, text and data records for Shubert's cell phone from Oct. 1 to Oct. 31.

Shubert is accused of stabbing Debra Jean Helgerson to death on Oct. 28 at her home in the 700 block of Chapparral Circle.

Prosecutors believe the murder was in retaliation for Helgerson testifying against him four days earlier. Helgerson's daughter was seeking a protective order against Shubert.

Shubert remains in the Taylor County Jail on a $1.75 million bond.
