Abilene woman indicted, accused of exposing 1-year-old son to meth
ABILENE, Texas - An Abilene woman was indicted by a Taylor County grand jury Thursday on a state jail felony charge of endangering a child.
According to court documents, 39-year-old Katherine Maria Smith is accused of exposing her one-year-old son to methamphetamine. The documents say the baby tested positive for the drug in January of 2016.
While Smith denied using drugs around her son, she admitted to knowingly taking her son to houses where meth was used. She also acknowledged knowing that there would be meth residue in those homes.
In addition, Smith acknowledged that she knew "that a 1-year-old child will touch everything then put his hands in his mouth." Smith then admitted to exposing her son to the drug.
The court documents go on to say that Smith failed to bring her child to the designated emergency infant care provider.
Smith was arrested in connection with the case around one year later on January 8 of 2017. She bonded out of the Taylor County Jail the same day on a $7,500 bond.
