ACU pitchers pounded by McNeese

ABILENE, Texas - McNeese entered its three-game series weekend series against the Wildcats as the best-hitting team in the Southland Conference. The Cowboys proved statistics don't lie Saturday afternoon as they hammered out 19 hits against six Wildcat pitchers en route to an 18-5 win at Crutcher Scott Field.

The loss is the Wildcats' 11th straight as they dropped to 9-18 overall and 1-13 in the Southland, while the Cowboys improved to 22-9 and 12-2. The series is set to conclude Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Cowboys scored in every inning except the fourth and the seventh and took advantage of 10 walks issued by ACU pitchers, four batters hit by pitches, one balk and three Wildcat errors to roll to the win. Every player who went to the plate for the Cowboys had at least one hit and all but two drove in a run.

McNeese jumped out to a 5-0 lead through 2 1/2 innings before Cole Solomon hit a solo home run in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to 5-1. Then in the bottom of the fourth, ACU sophomore shortstop Mark Pearson hit a two-run home run - his first collegiate home run - to cut the lead to 5-3.

But in the top of the fourth, the Cowboys answered with four unearned runs, and then tacked on three more in the top of the sixth on a three-run home run by Will Fox, pushing the lead to 12-3. The Cowboys would go on to score seven more runs, but that three-run shot effectively put an end to the game.

Solomon was 3 for 3 for the Wildcats, while Luis Trevino was 2 for 4 and Bradley Lewis was 3 for 4. Pearson drove in three runs with an RBI groundout and the two-run home run.
