Abilene ISD has hundreds of spots for head start programs

ABILENE, Texas - Hundreds of parents registered their kids to attend Abilene Independent School District's Long Early Learning Center and Crockett Early Head Start, but there are still spots available.

There are about 850 slots open and only 200 were filled on the first day of registration. The next two-day registration event is from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on May 2 and May 3 at the Abilene Convention Center.

"You'll need to bring your child's birth certificate, Social Security card, shot record, and proof of income. The best thing to bring is your W-2 or your tax return from last year and then proof of residency," said head start coordinator Tammy Jones.

Sabrena Ramos signed up Wednesday afternoon and said she's a little nervous sending her nearly 4-year-old boy off to school, but she knows it will be a great learning experience for him.

"I want my child to be ahead in his learning. He's four this year, so I think it's about time we get him in there and kind of get him a head start," Ramos said. "He's really excited … if my son's excited for learning I'm all for it."

Mila Borrego, who used to work at Woodson Early Childhood Center, said the program will give her granddaughter a hands-on learning experience.

"A lot of it's just like play dough and shaving cream, just doing letters with that and just doing a lot of fun things to help them learn," Borrego said.
