Brownwood ISD's new calendar includes 3-day weekends every month

BROWNWOOD, Texas - Students at the Brownwood Independent School District have a reason to celebrate--next year's school calendar includes a three-day weekend break every month.

The BISD board of trustees approved the 2017-2018 school year calendar on Monday. Students begin classes on Aug. 23 and their first three-day break is in September in observance of Labor Day.

While the district decided to give teachers and students more frequent breaks, BISD Superintendent Dr. Joe Young said on Thursday it doesn't mean kids will spend less time in class.

"You have to have a little bit of time to recharge, you have to have a little bit of time to catch your breath," Young said. "You want to be sure that when you're in those classrooms for those 172 days that we're going at 100 percent."

The process for developing the calendar began in November. The district received community feedback on several versions before finally reaching the one approved Monday.

Young said the frequent breaks came by rearranging a few holiday breaks. Students will still be in class for the state-mandated 75,600 minutes.

"We think that you could break that up at least every six weeks. Where you can go, 'OK, let's have some family time for a day,'" Young said.

Jennifer Worsham works as a dental assistant in Brownwood and has three kids enrolled in the district. She thinks the frequent breaks are worth it.

"I think it's a great idea," she said Thursday. "It gives kids a break, especially the ones that are really active and don't ever stop."

Young said the district did weigh the impact on households with two working parents. He added that the district considered adding a week-long break in October, but passed on it.
