Breckenridge validated by last-second kick to win district

BRECKENRIDGE, Texas - Midway through the season, the Breckenridge Buckaroos weren't feeling so great.

It's hard to be motivated after losing your first five games of the season. However, the Bucks were able to pull lessons from those loses, and use that insight to rattle off five straight victories to claim the school's first district title since 2005.

"To see their work come to fruition after grinding out a non-district with no success, and finishing off the district run the way we did, it felt good," fourth-year head coach Casey Hubble said. "It feel good for our kids, for our town and for our staff."

Breckenridge upset sixth-ranked Brock in the season finale, 30-28, with a 35-yard field goal in the final seconds by senior Jose Escobedo.

"I'd been practicing for that moment for two years," said Escobedo, who also made a game-winning kick against Paradise in double overtime to start District 4-3A Division I play.

"It felt amazing. I was really nervous, but I went out there after [Brock] called a timeout feeling positive. I went out there and did my thing. All the practice I did paid off."

The Bucks are probably one of the most dangerous 5-5 teams in Class 3A. They say there's a big difference between the mid-point of the season to this week.

"From week five to now it's a lot more electric," senior running back/defensive back Zach Willis said. "We come out, we practice hard every day trying to get better."

Breckenridge will face Merkel, another 5-5 team, in the Football Friday Night Game of the Week. Watch FFN starting at 11:05 p.m. for extended highlights and a special look at how the Merkel football team has helped turnaround one player's life journey.

The bi-district playoff game will kick-off at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at Brownwood's Gordon Wood Stadium.
