Brownwood creates job dedicated to bringing more sporting events
BROWNWOOD, Texas - The city of Brownwood created a new staff position at the start of 2017 that will focus on bringing more sporting events to town.
Roland Soto began his duties Tuesday as the first-ever sports coordinator for the city. It's a homecoming of sorts for the Brownwood native, who spent 12 years working all over the Lone Star State, mostly near Austin.
"I'm ready to make the community better, ready to bring these events here," Soto said.
Guy Andrews, Executive Director of the Brownwood Municipal Development District Guy Andrews said the BMDD is working with the city and the chamber of commerce to fund the move.
Andrews said this will assist in attracting events to sports facilities that have opened within the past few years, including the Bert V Massey II Sports Complex and the Brownwood Soccer Complex.
"We have expended a large amount of money, about $7 million on our facilities," Andrews said. "We want to make sure they're utilized."
The new sports coordinator position will help with the influx of teams they expect will use the facilities, according to Andrews.
"It's centrally located so if you're having a statewide tournament, not all the teams have to travel from one end of the state to the other."
