Brownwood man arrested on 10 counts of forgery for writing fake checks
BROWNWOOD, Texas - Police arrested a Brownwood man for allegedly writing 10 fraudulent checks worth more than $2,000 over the last nine months to purchase prepaid debit cards.
Damon Beard, 44, was taken to the Brown County Jail Friday on 10 counts of forgery financial instrument, according to jail records.
A complaint filed through a Brown County justice of the peace reported that Beard gave fraudulent checks to employees at Brookeshire's supermarket beginning December of 2016.
An employee told a Brownwood police officer that Beard was using the checks to purchase prepaid debit cards, according to the complaint.
Police used surveillance video to confirm Beard had used the forged checks at other Brownwood businesses, according to the complaint.
Court documents reported that the most recent check was used on September 5 at Brookeshire's.
Beard bonded out of jail the same Friday night he was arrested, according to the Brown County Jail's website.
