Bulldogs ground game makes impressive statement in bounce-back win
ABILENE, Texas - Last week, Wylie football coach Hugh Sandifer emphasized his teams need to respond following two-straight non district losses. On Friday on the road against Brownfield, they certainly did just that. The Bulldogs pounced on the Cubs from their third possession forward for a 50-7 victory, sending Wylie into its bye week at 3-2 on the year before district. "We didn't talk about a win as much as we talked about playing better and I thought we did that," said Sandifer at Monday's press conference. "It was a good feeling to get a win for the kids who worked so hard to fix things after last week." Sam King made his return after suffering a knee injury against Monterey, throwing for 82 yards and 3 TD's in the win. But it was a coming out party for Bailey Hicks and Brady Horn. Bailey, having to sub in as fullback, joined Horn in combining for 294 yards and 4 scores - both getting much of the work as senior Cason Grant heals from injury last week. And boy did they do quite the job. Coming into Friday, Wylie had been held to under 100 yards rushing in each of the previous two weeks. After departing Frenship on Friday, the total rushing yards for Wylie topped 383 on 32 carries. So overall, this Wylie group certainly is pleased with how its rebounded as they have a week off to prepare to host Brownwood in the district opener, and now coach Hugh Sandifer has an added bonus in what they've got now attacking on the ground . "Bailey Hicks and Brady Horn both had big games and nice creases to run through and the linemen did a good job," he said. Overall our team just seemed to have the urgency we were missing last week, but it was also really nice to see that we've developed some depth at the tailback position."
