EARLY, Texas - The city of Early is proposing a new tax rate and residents will have the opportunity to comment on it in less then two weeks.

A public hearing is scheduled for Aug. 22 at 6 p.m. inside Early City Hall.

Currently, property owners pay $56 a year in taxes if their home is appraised at $100,000. The city wants to lower that to $55 a year for a home valued at $100,000.

"We're dropping it because our sales tax is up and our property values are up, so we're passing the growth to our citizens," Early Assistant City Manager Larry McConn said.

The city hopes to adopt the proposed tax rate at its September 12 meeting.
