Cowboys grab important win over ASC co-leader Howard Payne


ABILENE, TX - Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in a 100-85 win in first-place showdown over Howard Payne on Thursday night at the Mabee Complex.

The teams came into the game tied in the ASC West standings with Sul Ross State. The Lobos lost at McMurry, pushing the Cowboys into first place by themselves. HSU has now won six straight games and is HSU is 12-4 overall and 6-1 in league play. Howard Payne fell to 9-6 overall and 5-2 in ASC play.

Dashun Dixon led the Cowboys with 21 points off the bench and Duane Hopper added 20 points and six rebounds. Christian O'Neal had 15 points and nine assists and Justin Jones had 15 points, nine rebounds, eight assists and seven blocks. Nathaniel Jack had 12 points and 14 rebounds.

Jones also became the school and ASC all-time leader in blocked shots with 301 for his career.

The Cowboys led 24-18 when it broke open the game with a 16-3 run to push the lead out to 40-19. The biggest lead of the half came at 52-28 and HSU led 61-40 at halftime.

Caleb Spoon's 3-pointer early in the second half made it 71-46 for the biggest lead of the night. HPU finally cut into the deficit late in the half but the outcome was never in doubt.

HSU had a 30-9 advantage in points off the bench and had a 30-18 lead in fast break points.

Khyce Randall had 32 points for HPU and Rickey Guillory added 27 points and 10 rebounds.

HSU will host Sul Ross State on Saturday at 3 p.m.
