Cowboys top Cru in 2-OT thriller for first victory in Belton
BELTON, LA - Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team outlasted Mary Hardin-Baylor 120-112 in double overtime to beat the Cru for the first time in school history in Belton.
The game featured 17 lead changes and 14 ties as the two longtime rivals went back and forth throughout. Neither team led by more than six points in the first half and the Cru led 42-38 at halftime.
UMHB pushed the lead out to 49-40, but HUS answered with back-to-back 3-pointers by Caleb Spoon and Duane Hopper. The Cowboys eventually took a 83-78 lead late in the second half on a Christian O'Neal jumper but Braden Hammond hit a 3-pointer with :47 to play and Daniel Mills had a jumper with :04 to play to send the game to overtime.
The Cowboys again had a lead for most of the second overtime and led 98-95 when Aubrie King buried a running 3-pointer from about 35 foot to send the game to a second overtime.
O'Neal scored just two points in the first half because of foul trouble and then picked up his fourth on an offensive foul on the first possession of the second half. He came back in around the 10 minute mark and then scored 22 of his 24 points in the final 10 minutes and the two overtimes.
His 3-pointer with 1:28 to go in the second overtime sealed the game as he gave the Cowboys a seven-point lead and he hit two more shots in the final minute and Dashun Dixon hit four free throws.
O'Neal led six Cowboys in double figures with 24 points. Nathaniel Jack had 19 points and 12 rebounds and six assists and Justin Jones had 18 points, 14 rebounds, nine blocked shots and six assists. Duane Hopper had 18 points, Caleb Spoon 17 and Dashun Dixon 15.
Demairus Cress had 34 points for the Cru and Daniel Mills had 32 points and 13 rebounds. Braden Hammond had 20 and King added 11.
HSU has won nine straight games and is 15-4 on the year and 9-1 in ASC play. UMHB fell to 12-7 overall and 5-5 in league play. HSU plays at Concordia on Saturday at 3 p.m.
