Cowboys win game one of final regular season series
ABILENE, TX - PRESS RELEASE (HSU Athletics) - Hardin-Simmons' baseball team beat Sul Ross State 18-7 on Friday night in American Southwest Conference action at Hunter Field.
The Cowboys are now 17-21 on the season and 9-13 in ASC action. They need one more win to qualify for the ASC Tournament. Sul Ross State fell to 14-24 overall and 7-15 in ASC play.
HSU jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. Dylan Sweeney had a two-run single in the first inning and Taylor Cooling scored on a throwing error in the second.
The Lobos added two runs in the fourth on a Jonathon Bigley home run. HSU came right back with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Cade Johnson had a two-run single, Tyler Bradshaw had an RBI single and another run scored on a wild pitch.
Bigley added a two-run double in the fifth inning to cut it to 7-4 and HSU responded with a six spot in the bottom of the fifth. Sweeney had an RBI double, Jake Todd had an RBI single and Taylor Cooling hit a two-run home run over the scoreboard in left. Johnson added an RBI groundout.
Sul Ross State scored two runs in the top of the seventh and HSU scored two runs on a Zack de Luna single. HSU scored three in the eighth on RBI singles by Bradshaw and Tyson Mauser and sac fly by Cooling. The Lobos added a run in the ninth.
Cooling had four hits for the Cowboys and Sweeny, Bradshaw, de Luna and Cody Berryman had two hits each. Phillip Russell, Bigley and Wesley Moss had two hits each for the Lobos.
Jeremy Hallmark started for the Cowboys and allowed four runs in four and two-third innings. Mike Richardson relieved him and picked up the win in relief to improve to 3-2. Brock Bourland worked the final two and two-third innings for the Cowboys. Cody Remore took the loss allowing 10 runs in four innings to fall to 5-5 on the year.
The teams will play a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, which is also senior day for the Cowboys.
