ABILENE, Texas - The Matera Paper Company building that burned down in 2012 will soon have a new purpose now that a buyer has closed on the property.

Tim Smith told us he's excited to take on this new project. He wants to make the space useful for the community and says he has a few options in mind.

"We could go a couple of different directions on it, " said owner Tim Smith. " We thought about some townhomes with rooftop decks that look over downtown. We thought about a big pavilion, more outdoor space with the sunken garden an amphitheater."

A local realtor believes in Smith's vision and hopes that it continues a trent of revitalization.

"[Tim Smith] can look at something and creatively bring an idea and I thought this is the ideal person to bring the Matera foundation back to life," said John Hill with Barnett & Hill Real Estate Services.

Smith also owns the South of Downtown Abilene District Courtyard on South 2nd Street, where a mural was unveiled Thursday night.
