DPS identifies trucker killed in I-20 crash in Putnam

PUTNAM, Texas - The Texas Department of Public Safety has identified the truck driver killed Friday when the 18-wheeler he was driving slammed into the back of a semi on I-20, just east of Putnam, in Callahan County.

Killed was Zelalem Yeneneh Eshete, 40, of Plano.

No other injuries were reported in the crash that occurred about 9 a.m. Friday.

DPS says Eshete was driving a 2011 Freightliner truck towing a semi-trailer on westbound I-20 when it crashed into the back of a 2014 Peterbilt truck pulling a semi-trailer.

According to DPS, the second truck was driven by Henry Stephen Peek, 58, of Canyon Lake. Peek wasn't injured in the crash.

The accident occurred while Peek was passing a parked 2016 Freightliner 18-wheeler. Its driver - Paul Elliott Coilton, 52, of Oakland, California - had pulled over on the north shoulder of I-20 on the westbound side, DPS said.

The crash remains under investigation.
