DPS trooper shot dead near Dallas, suspect in custody
FREESTONE COUNTY, Texas - A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper is dead after being shot in Freestone County, and authorities pursued the suspected shooter into Waller County Thursday night before capturing him.
The shooting happened at about 4 p.m. near Fairfield on Interstate 45, according to Navarro County authorities. The suspect was identified as Dabrett Black, a 5'11" black man weighing about 175 pounds.
At about 8 p.m., authorities said they were chasing Black and had engaged with him. Navarro County said they were searching for him near Prairie View before tweeting that he had been captured at about 8:45 p.m.
DPS identified the slain trooper as 41-year-old Damon Allen, who joined the department in 2002. He is survived by his wife and three children.
Gov. Greg Abbott issued the following statement Thursday.
"With heavy hearts on this Thanksgiving, Cecilia and I express our most sincere condolences to the family, colleagues and friends of the Trooper who was callously killed today in the line of duty. As law enforcement continues to search for the individual responsible for this heinous crime, I ask that all of Texas keep this Trooper and his brothers and sisters in blue in their thoughts and prayers. The killer will face justice, and the State of Texas will continue to offer our unwavering support for the men and women in law enforcement who keep our communities safe."
