Fire official: Cause of fire at historic Abilene hospital‘undetermined'

ABILENE, Texas - The cause of a fire at the former St. Ann's Hospital earlier this month will be "listed as undetermined," the Abilene Fire Department said Monday.

"Investigators have not been able to make a determination on the cause of the fire," Lt. Mike Miller said in an email.

Fire officials initially leaned toward the possibility that the blaze was the result of arson.

The now vacant building in the 1300 block of Cypress Street caught fire around 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 9. The roof collapsed before the fire was put out around 4:30 p.m. on that day.

The property, which was St. Ann's from 1940-1968, had recently been purchased by Highland Church of Christ. The church plans to turn it into apartments for the homeless.
