Former Abilene mayor Norm Archibald named 2017 Citizen of the Year
ABILENE, Texas - The Abilene Chamber of Commerce has announced that its 2017 Citizen of the Year is former mayor Norm Archibald.
Archibald, who resigned from his seat after serving nearly two decades as the city's leader, accepted the award Thursday night at the Abilene Convention Center.
The award has been given annually since 1946. Abilene City Councilwoman Donna Albus, the 2016 winner, presented Archibald his award. Organizations and Abilene residents submitted nominees for the award based on efforts to make the Abilene community better over the past year.
According to the Chamber, Archibald has lived in Abilene for more than 30 years. He's served or is currently serving on the following boards: Abilene Metropolitan Planning Organization, Abilene-Taylor County Venue District, Texas Trails Council-Boy Scouts of America, Abilene Industrial Foundation, Abilene Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Committee, Abilene Business and Estate Planning Council, United Way of Abilene, Junior Achievement, YMCA and many others.
In addition to serving the city as mayor and councilman, he's worked with the Hendrick Health System since 1994. He is currently the vice president of the Hendrick foundation and is largely responsible for fundraising and special projects.
