Former Olympian and Abilene native hosts speed camp for young athletes
ABILENE, TX - Young athletes had the chance of a lifetime on Saturday, to get coaching and conditioning from an Olympic athlete who calls Abilene his home.
D1 Sports hosted the Jonathan Johnson's speed camp Saturday morning at Hardin-Simmons University, featuring a handful of drills and instruction all designed to condition athletes and get their fitness to the next level. Johnson won the 800 meters during the Olympic trials in 2004, where he placed 8th in the Olympic semi-final. He was ranked fifth in the nation for the 800 meters in 2006, and was the 2001 Texas 5A State Champion. Now his focus, is on making a more permanent difference in his hometown.
"My goal over the next few years, is to be here more often, not just coming in the summer doing camps or working with groups, but to be here on a more continuous basis where I can give these athletes a part of me that I got from coaches and other talents and stuff as well, " said Johnson. "That would give them a better idea, and better understanding of what it takes to be a really good high school athlete or college or professional one day."
