Funnel cake wins at West Texas Fair& Rodeo's new BBQ competition

ABILENE, Texas - The West Texas Fair and Rodeo is now in full swing out at the Taylor County Expo Center, and the first day has brought with it a new competition that may soon rival the traditional fried food fares you find at the fair.

"Step Aside, Fried" is a barbecue competition that was held Friday evening for the first time. Almost 40 entries competed to delight the taste buds of nine judges.

The Best in Show main dish winner for Step Aside, Fried's inaugural year was a BBQ funnel cake made by Old Time Funnel Cakes.

Second place was French brisket; brisket wrapped in French toast with a BBQ dipping sauce by Mama Sally's.

And the best dessert went to The Vittle Barn with its dipped cheesecakes on a stick.
