Hardin-Simmons earns third straight blowout win
BROWNWOOD, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' seventh-ranked football team passed its first road test of the year as it dominated Howard Payne 63-3 in American Southwest Conference action at Gordon Wood Stadium in Brownwood on Saturday.
HSU took the opening kickoff and went 80 yards in seven plays. Jaquan Hemphill capped it off with a 15-yard touchdown run. The Cowboy defense then forced a quick three-and-out and the Cowboys went 67 yards in 11 plays and Ty Hooper hit Reese Childress on a 20-yard touchdown pass.
Hooper was making his first career start for the Cowboys.
The defense forced another quick HPU punt, and HSU went 27 yards in 10-plays and Luis Diaz hit a 33-yard field goal to give the Cowboys a 16-0 lead with :41 to play in the first quarter.
After another forced punt, the Cowboys went 86 yards in four plays for a score as Hooper hit Childress along the sideline and Childress slipped a defender and tip-toed the sideline and then ran inside the 10 where he stiff-armed a defender and dove into the end zone.
Zach Goodson then forced a fumble on the ensuing kickoff and Heriberto Elizondo recovered it and Kavan Johnson scored on the first play from seven yards out and HSU led 30-0. HPU added its only score of the game with :20 to go in the first half when Jacob Walters hit a 27-yard field goal and the Cowboys went into halftime with a 30-3 lead.
The defense forced a punt and on the first play for the Cowboys in the second half Hemphill raced 65 yards for a touchdown. Another forced punt, gave the Cowboys the ball back and Zai Zai Smith went 11 yards for a touchdown and HSU led 44-3 with 8:58 to play in the third quarter.
Xavier Jones made it 51-3 on the next series as he went 33 yards for a scored after a short punt by HPU. Marc Reed added touchdown with 2:45 to play in the game on a 27-yard run. After another HPU punt, the Cowboys ran a run into the middle and Jones broke it 83 yards for another touchdown with :08 to play.
The Cowboys had 654 yards of offense on the day with 356 coming on the ground. The defense held HPU to 168 total yards and just 2.8 yards per play. HPU was just 1-for-15 on third-down in the contest.
Hooper was solid for the Cowboys going 14-for-17 for 208 yards. Marc Reed was 9-for-12 for 90 yards in the contest.
Hemphill had 128 yards on 12 carries and scored twice and Jones added 128 yards and two scores as well. Childress had six catches for 113 yards and two touchdowns. Mason Jennings was 6-for-22 for 67 yards for Howard Payne.
Matthew Hawkins and Josh White had six tackles each for the Cowboys. HSU also broke up eight passes on the day, had three sacks and seven tackles for loss.
The Cowboys are 3-0 on the year and 2-0 in ASC play. HPU fell to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in conference play. HSU will travel to Marshall to play East Texas Baptist at 7 p.m. next Saturday.
