HAWLEY, Texas - After the death of a Jones County man Saturday on FM 3326, residents between Anson and Hawley are questioning whether the road itself may have been a factor.

The Department of Public Safety's preliminary crash report doesn't indicate if road conditions were a factor in the accident that left Vanes Thompson dead. DPS said he was driving east Saturday when he veered off the road and rolled over multiple times. He wasn ' t wearing his seatbelt and was ejected from his car.

Thompson ' s friend of 35 years, Rhonda Manuel, said she anticipated there being a crash on FM 3326 after new asphalt was placed in August. The Texas Department of Transportation placed dark asphalt over the lane to level up the wheel path, but the road has been left bumpy and uneven with high shoulder drop offs.

Manuel said driving down that road makes her nervous and that she hopes it will get fixed soon. "There is no room for error, I mean, you move over a tiny bit and it's so narrow, you are going to lose control and have a bad wreck," said Manuel. " A good man lost his life and I really believe that is was due to the terrible road conditions." More than a dozen people have commented on a Facebook page called Hawley Community Forum saying they hope the road will be fixed.

TxDOT said they plan to do additional work on the road in November, weather permitting.
