HSU Cowgirls drop second straight
AUSTIN, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team lost its second straight game and severely hampered its chances of making the postseason tournament with an 86-70 loss to Concordia on Saturday afternoon in Austin.
Concordia jumped out to an early 10-4 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. They led 28-13 after the first quarter and 52-27 at halftime.
HSU had an 11-0 run midway through the third quarter to cut it to 52-37 but the Tornados then hit back-to-back 3-pointers to push the lead back to 21 and the Cowgirls were never within 20 until the final minute of the game when they scored five straight points to set up the final margin.
Taylor Gaffney and Kourtney Holyfield led the Cowgirls with 12 points each, both off the bench. Kayla Brown added 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Jaela Dejean led five Concordia players in double figures with 25 points. Brenisha Payne added 17 points.
he Cowgirls are now 7-12 on the year and 3-8 in conference play. Concordia won its third straight game and is now 13-7 overall and 6-5 in conference play. HSU is now three games behind the Tornados in the league standings for the fourth and final ASC tournament spot. The Cowgirls play at Sul Ross State on Thursday in Alpine.
