Iraan school bus involved in fatal crash to be salvaged in Abilene
ABILENE, Texas - The Iraan-Sheffield ISD school bus involved in a fatal wreck on Dec. 2 was taken Thursday to a scrap yard in Abilene to be salvaged.
The bus was carrying the Iraan High School cheerleader team along with two sponsors, Liz Pope and Christina Garlock, back home following a football game in Colorado City. A vehicle driving the wrong way on Interstate 20 caused a collision between the bus and an 18-wheeler.
Pope was killed in the crash, and many others inside the bus were sent to the hospital with injuries. Garlock sustained serious injuries and was hospitalized for multiple days.
A DPS report indicates that the driver of the original car who caused the crash may have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol , but no charges have been filed at this time.
A week after the crash, hundreds of cheerleaders from around the state showed up to support the squad during Iraan's playoff game against Wimberley in Abilene.
