Lady Eagles focused on taking next step in playoff run
ABILENE, TX - High School softball begins the run to UIL state beginning on Thursday, and for Abilene High - led by first-year coach Steve Childress - they're the third Abilene team gearing up to make a run.
The Lady Eagles enter as the three-seed, having clinched it prior to the team's final district loss against Timber Creek, setting up a first round date with Mansfield on Thursday.
This is the second consecutive playoff trip for Abilene High -- a first in many years - and after last season's first round exit, it's not just about being a playoff team anymore.
It's about taking the next step.
"Just to be that first team in however many years it's been at Abilene High -- to be that first team to win a playoff series and just advance this program to where it needs to be," said coach Steven Childress before Wednesday's practice.
"If you can have a team this young with as little seniors as we have right now, then you can honestly do anything and I feel like it gives us a lot of confidence in making us think we can go pretty far," added senior Kayla Otis.
The Lady Eagles face 4-6A runner-up Mansfield at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at Mansfield, before a game two at 2 p.m. Saturday at Abilene High, and a game three if necessary to follow.
