ABILENE, Texas - The city of Abilene has approved a partnership with Texas State Technical College for a new industrial training facility near the Abilene Regional Airport.

Groundbreaking on the land, which is between Navajo Trail and Loop 322, will take place next Thursday. The campus is expected to open in the fall of 2018. (MAP)

The project comes after a study commissioned by TSTC found that Abilene needed more industrial training in the area. Specific needs for programs in welding, industrial maintenance, and electrical power were identified.

"We anticipate the start of the construction for the new TSTC campus very soon," said Abilene Mayor Norm Archibald. "This will bring greater training for our workforce, which will lead to more companies wanting to take advantage of coming to Abilene to start their businesses."

The city of Abilene has committed $6 million to the project, and $12 million for the school was approved by the Texas Legislature.

Nearly all Abilene City Council members voted in favor of the project, with Bruce Kreitler opposing the move.
