Man arrested for intoxication manslaughter after driving off I-20 bridge in 2015
ABILENE, Texas - A Big Country man was arrested Wednesday for his alleged role in a fatal accident that occurred off of an I-20 bridge in west Abilene in 2015.
George Wallace Peeples, II, 44, was indicted last year for intoxication manslaughter for the crash, which resulted in the death of 38-year-old Christella Martinez Puentes, court documents state.
According to a search warrant, on May 22, 2015, Peeples was with Puentes and another man inside an SUV traveling east on Interstate 20 near Shirley Road in Abilene when the vehicle drifted to the left and entered the grass median.
The vehicle then continued up the median and approached the embankment overpass falling down to the street below. After impact, the vehicle kept going forward and overturned into a body of water, according to court documents.
Peeples and the other man in the vehicle, 43-year-old Louis Gutierrez Castillo, told police that Puentes was driving the vehicle when it flipped. Court documents state that police investigations don't support that allegation.
An indictment for Peeples was filed on June 16, 2016. The indictment accuses Peeples of driving the vehicle with his knee while under the influence of a controlled substance or drug before it went off the bridge. It's not known what drug Peeples may have been using at the time of the crash.
The indictment also states that Puentes was a passenger in the rear of the vehicle.
Peeples is currently held in the Taylor County Jail for second-degree intoxication manslaughter and multiple charges out of Eastland and Nolan counties.
