McMurry hoops having turn around season
ABILENE, Texas - The McMurry men's basketball team is enjoying success it hasn't seen in a while.
At 7-7 the War Hawks have already more than doubled their win total from last season.
"The main thing we've been doing is making plays at the end of the game to get the wins," senior guard, and Abilene High graduate, Nate Estrada said. 'We were in a lot of close games last year, we just didn't finish them. I think we still got a lot of things to work on, but we like where we're at right now."
McMurry is running up and down the floor in Zach Pickelman's second season as head coach. The War Hawks are coming off a 109-104 victory at the University of Ozarks on Saturday, and have also hit 99 points twice, and 91 on another occasion
"Last year was new to everybody," said Pickelman. "We had a lot of returners this year, and we were able to help the younger guys out with the offensive and the defensive schemes."
McMurry hosts two teams tied for first place in the American Southwest Conference this weekend.
Thursday's game against Sul Ross State tips off at 7:30 p.m., while Saturday's tilt with Howard Payne begins at 3 p.m.
