National Sunglasses Day puts focus on eye health

ABILENE, Texas - While it may seem like every day is a newly designated holiday, but Monday is National Sunglasses Day, and it's aimed at bringing awareness to eye health.

As you age, the sun's ultraviolet rays can cause damage to your eyelids and eyes. While it's widely known that the sun can cause irreversible skin damage, the sun can also cause sight issues or cancer of the eyes.

The most common effects are cataracts, which is the clouding of the eye lens.

But you combat the sun and its health impacts by wearing UV filtering sunglasses whenever you are outside or driving. Doing so will decrease your risk of eye issues from the sun and will help keep you seeing clearly for years to come.
