Open registration begins soon for AISD's learning center and early head start
ABILENE, Texas - Long Early Learning Center and Crockett Early Head Start will begin early registration for the 2017-2018 school year on Tuesday. Jane Long Elementary was closed down for renovation and another building was built next to it for the new Long Early Learning Center.
"We're leaving two of the very oldest facilities the district has and that's Locust and the Woodson," said AISD Construction Coordinator Joe Humphrey. "We'll be consolidating in all of our early childhood programs that's below the kindergarten level. We'll come down to two locations now. The prime location is here [Long Early Learning Center] and the secondary location over at Crockett."
Long Early Learning Center will be for kids ages 3-years-old and up until they start kindergarten. The campus will have 50 classrooms and hold approximately 900 kids. Because this will be one of Abilene Independent School District's larger schools, a large bus stop was added in front of the new building for all the kids that will be bussed in.
"They will come in from everywhere. Very few students walk into this program. They're bussed in and brought from other locations," Humphrey said.
The new campus will also include three new playgrounds, a renovated cafeteria with two serving lines, and additional classrooms, offices and bathrooms. This project costs $8 million.
"This is the last of what you'd call a really major project out of our bond issue from 2013," Humphrey said.
Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on April 4th - 5th and May 2nd - 3rd at the Abilene Civic Center.
