CISCO, Texas - A pit bull was shot and killed Saturday after Cisco police say it attacked a girl and an officer.

According to new Cisco Police Chief Scott McAuley, Officer Thomas Stiles responded to a home where a girl was attacked in her own yard by the pit bull.

When Stiles arrived, McAuley said the pit bull "came around the corner of a house in a full run."

Stiles began to draw his service weapon as he backed up. He stumbled and the gun went off, striking him in the leg.

The pit bull continued to charge at Stiles who fired two more shots, killing the dog.

Both Stiles and the girl will recover from their injuries because Stiles was able to "maintain his composure and do what was necessary, in the face of certain danger, to end the attack," said McAuley.

The owner told police the dog had never attacked anyone before.
