Records fall in blowout win for HSU Cowboys
CLARKSVILLE, AR - Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team set school records for points in a half and 3-point makes as it resumed American Southwest Conference play with a 135-95 rout of Ozarks on Thursday night in Clarksville.
The Cowboys came out strong with a 13-2 to start the game. Caleb Spoon set the tone for the night with a pair of 3-pointers on the first two possessions. Spoon, a junior from Breckenridge, finished the night with a career-best 33 points and he was 11-for-18 from 3-point range. The 11 triples were the new school record. Dashun Dixon had the old record.
Dixon also had a big night as he had 28 points and was 8-for-12 from 3-point range. The Cowboys hit 18-of-29 shots from behind the arc in the first half and had an 84-48 lead at halftime. HSU finished the night 28-of-54 from 3-point range.
The Cowboys finished one point shy of the school record for points in a game. The record was 136 against Hillsdale Free Will Baptist in 1993.
HSU had seven players in double figures in the contest. Spoon had 33 and Dixon 28. Christian O'Neal had 20 points and 11 assists and Nathaniel Jack had 20 points, eight rebounds, eight assists and four steals. Duane Hopper added 13 points, Ryan Leiss 11 and Justin Jones 10.
Josh Berard led Ozarks with 33, Jace Richardson had 26 and Dylan Gray added 20. The Eagles shot 54.9 percent in the game and still lost by 40 points.
HSU has won four straight games and is now 10-4 on the year and 4-1 in the ASC. Ozarks fell to 5-6 overall and 1-5 in conference play. The Cowboys play at UT Dallas on Saturday at 3 p.m.
