Reigning baseball champs back on the diamond
ABILENE, Texas - Under a perfect, cloudless sky the Wylie Bulldogs began baseball practice for the 2017 season.
The defending Class 4A state champions returned to the diamond with a focus on the new year.
"We don't look far off in the distance, we just look game-to-game," senior outfielder Cameron Hanna said. "We expect to win every time we step on the field. It's not something you look at all the way at the end. It's a building process."
With six All-District players back from that title winning team, Wylie is look at by many to have a great chance to return to Austin for state. But the Bulldogs are no stranger to high expectations.
"All that stuff takes care of itself," head coach Clay Martin said. "None of that stuff comes easy. These guys have great work ethic and are coming out here with a great attitude and ready to get to work."
The Bulldogs feature four players that have already signed to play college baseball (Zach Smith, Bryce Gist, and Hutton Frazier to Midland College, and Tyler Henson to Blinn College), and Hanna said he committed to play at Hardin-Simmons on Monday.
"We have a lot of experience and great leadership," said Martin. "Some of those guys returning are seniors that played a lot of baseball games the last two years. I think experience, for us, will be a plus."
Wylie begins the season with scrimmages against Midland Lee, Cooper, Abilene High, and San Angelo Lake View. The games start counting with a tournament in Shallowater on February 23.
