Seven AHS tennis players join impressive list headed to regionals
ABILENE, Texas - Seven Abilene High Eagles have qualified to the Class 6A Region I tennis tournament.
Two pairs of girls doubles -- freshmen McKenna Bryan and Katherine Morris, and sophomores Lauren Schaeffer and Rachel Tebow -- qualified by placing in the top two in the District 3-6A tournament.
Bryan and Morris defeated Schaeffer and Tebow in three sets in the district final, leaving Schaeffer and Tebow needing to win a playback against Keller to advance.
Last season Schaeffer and Tebow lost in the second round of the district tourney, but they say being able to practice against another quality girls pairing helped elevate their play.
"The coaches have us play almost every day, play against each other," said Schaeffer. "Because of that we can figure out different ways of playing different styles."
Senior Sara Horn also advanced in the girls singles division, as well as the mixed doubles twosome of Hope Brown and Cole Edwards.
"I can't remember the last time we had seven going to regionals," AHS head coach Stacy Brown said. "We're very excited. These kids are such a great group of kids and the excitement they bring to the tennis court is just awesome. I could not be prouder of them."
This will be the first time for all seven players to move past the district tournament.
The regional tournament is April 18-19 at the Arlington Tennis Center.
