Shelstead's double-double leads ACU past McNeese

ABILENE, Texas - Sydney Shelstead recorded a 21-point, 13-rebound double-double on 8-of-9 shooting and three other Wildcats reached double figures in scoring as Abilene Christian women's basketball posted a 77-65 victory over McNeese Saturday at Moody Coliseum. ACU improved to 13-7 overall and 7-1 against the Southland Conference with the victory, while the Cowgirls dropped to .500 at 10-10 and 5-4. The Wildcats led today's contest from start to finish, beginning with Alexis Mason's 3-pointer 21 seconds into the game. ACU would go up by as many as 12 points in the first quarter and grabbed its biggest lead of the game at 18 points following a trey from freshman Dominique Golightly with 4:23 left in the first half. The Cowgirls, however, would respond with a 9-0 run to go into the break down 36-27, but couldn't keep pace with the Wildcats into the second half as the home team pushed its lead back out to as many as 15 points. Shelstead was close to unstoppable on both ends to the court, because in addition to making 89 percent of her shots, she also pulled down eight defensive rebounds and established a new career high with four blocks. Freshman Breanna Wright was second on the team with 12 points. Mason contributed 11 and Lizzy Dimba totaled 10 points to go along with a career high eight assists. The Wildcats shot 50 percent (29-58) from the field with 36 points in the paint thanks to a sharp passing game that resulted in 24 assists. Mason assisted on four baskets, which gives her 250 for her career, and sophomore Sara Williamson had seven in just 12 minutes off the bench. ACU's defense limited the Cowgirls to 36.9 percent shooting with McNeese missing 19 of its 22 3-point attempts (13.6). They also were outrebounded by the Wildcats, 40-34, but helped themselves stay in the game by knocking down 14 of 18 free throws (77.8). ACU is now 3-1 all-time vs. the Cowgirls with its only loss taking place during the 2013-14 season. The Wildcats return to action Wednesday, Feb. 1 for a 5:30 p.m. game at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. They return home next Saturday, Feb. 4 for a doubleheader against Sam Houston State.
