Slow start stings War Hawks

ABILENE, Texas - The McMurry University men's basketball team did not score its first points until more than six minutes had elapsed and were never able to recover in a 74-68 American Southwest Conference loss to Howard Payne University at Kimbrell Arena. The War Hawks fell to 8-8 overall and 4-4 in the ASC, while the Yellow Jackets improved to 10-6 and 6-2 in ASC play.

McM found itself down 13-0 at the 14:50 mark of the first half. Krishawn Terry's layup at 13:34 finally got McM on the board. A Terry free throw at 9:57 helped the War Hawks climb back to within five points, but the team could get no closer in the opening segment and trailed going into the halftime locker room, 37-25.

HPU held its advantage for much of the second half. Trailing by 10 points (68-58) with 5:08 to play, the War Hawks went on a 7-1 run to get within four points with two minutes left on a pair of LaRandall Scroggins free throws. But McM would get no closer as the Yellow Jackets held on.

Scroggins topped the McMurry scorers with 14 points, including making good on 6-of-10 free throws. Scroggins also shared team-high rebound honors - with Mike Williams Jr. - by grabbing six boards.

Zacc Carter came off of the War Hawks' bench to score 13 points, hitting 4-of-7 from the floor and 5-of-6 free throws. Carter also had a pair of steals. Darius Watts also finished in double figures with 12 points, including a pair of treys, and corralling five rebounds, as well.

Nate Estrada added nine points and five boards, with Williams chipping in six points. Terry and Aaron Gettys each booked five points, with Luke Stephenson tallying four.

Stephenson made three steals to lead all players in thefts. Terry and Williams had three and two blocked shots, respectively.

McM will be off until Jan. 21 when it travels across town to face Hardin-Simmons to begin a string of five-consecutive road games.
