Stamford's Johnson wins KTXS/ATFCU Player of the Week
STAMFORD, Texas - Stamford running back Steven Johnson made his presence felt with four touchdowns in the Bulldogs comeback 35-28 win at Anson to begin district, earning the KTXS/Abilene Teachers' Federal Credit Union Player of the Week honor.
"Big time games like that, players show out. That's what you expect," head coach Ronnie Casey said.
"It was just amazing coming out your senior year, first district game and stealing one on the road," said Johnson.
Johnson also gained more than 250 offensive yards, mostly on the ground, in the victory.
"When he busts off big plays like that it makes me want to block harder, makes me want to do better," senior lineman H.D. Lewis said. "I know it does the same thing for everybody else on the team."
Johnson, nicknamed Bo Bo, said he'd rather have his offensive line receive this award.
"If they can get Player of the Week I'd like them to have it because they deserve it. Nobody recognizes what them guys do up there."
Perhaps Johnson gets his humbleness from Stamford's greatest football product -- James Washington. Washington is now a senior at Oklahoma State, and is considered the best receiver in college football.
This summer Washington came back to Stamford, and worked out with Johnson.
"He said, 'Hey you're a senior. You can be better than me in the long run. You've just got to keep your mind right. How good do you want to be in life?'" said Johnson.
"It's a blessing that he's telling me that. It's just like, don't forget about us, I'm not going to forget about y'all. Y'all came from my town, and I love y'all guys no matter what."
