Abilene library branch sees increase in visitors after move
ABILENE, Texas - It's been several months since the new south branch location of the Abilene Public Library opened inside the Mall of Abilene, and many residents have taken advantages of its services.
They're coming to take advantage of things like e-book rentals to the range of educational programs offered at the library.
"Since the south branch has opened, it's been busier than ever," said Tremain Jackson, manager at the south branch. "We're overwhelmed by the amount of people that are coming out."
Since the grand opening in November, more than 37,000 people have come through the library doors. That's more than twice the amount of people the library saw last year for the same time period.
"People checking out the new location or just mall visitors saying, 'Oh, what's that? A library? I didn't know a library was there!'" Jackson said of the increase in visitors.
If you have a library card, you're granted access to their complete digital e-book and audio collection. You can digital versions of your favorite books for up to two weeks.
"The great thing about the digital collection is that there are no fines. They return themselves when they're done," said Jackson.
Jackson said it's not just Taylor County residents who can take advantage of the library.
"As long as you live in Taylor County, your membership is free because you pay taxes to Taylor County. If you live outside of Taylor County, it's a $10 dollar non-resident fee," Jackson said. "It's an annual fee that gives you all the privileges to the library."
