Texas man arrested in slaying of woman, toddler
HALLSBURG, Texas (AP) - Investigators say a Central Texas man has been arrested in the fatal shooting of a toddler believed to be his daughter and the child's mother.
McLennan County jail records show 26-year-old Christopher Paul Weiss of Temple was being held Wednesday on a capital murder charge with bond set at $1 million.
Sheriff Parnell McNamara says Weiss was arrested Tuesday over the deaths of 24-year-old Valarie Martinez and her 1-year-old daughter, Azariah.
McNamara says Weiss is married to another woman and his spouse was with him when he arrested during a traffic stop in Temple. The sheriff says Weiss allegedly had a relationship with Martinez and she bore his child.
The victims were discovered Sunday near a reservoir east of Waco.
Jail records didn't list an attorney to speak for Weiss.
Investigators say a toddler in a car seat and her mother have been found shot to death near a Central Texas reservoir and both apparently were targeted.
McLennan County Sheriff Parnell McNamara says the deaths of 24-year-old Valarie Martinez and her 1-year-old daughter, Azariah, don't appear to be random. Investigators didn't immediately announce any arrests.
The sheriff says the bodies were discovered Sunday afternoon near Tradinghouse Creek Reservoir at Hallsburg, about 10 miles east of Waco. Some people who came upon the victims called 911.
Authorities say the mother's body was found about 20 feet from a car. McNamara says the child was in the vehicle and still buckled into her car seat.
The sheriff's office didn't immediately return a message Tuesday to provide additional details.
