Trial date set for Abilene mother charged with murder of newborn
ABILENE, Texas - A trial date has been set for an Abilene woman accused of killing her newborn baby.
Amber Craker is scheduled to stand trial Oct. 31 for the January murder of Ashley Nevaeh Cate. According to the arrest report, Craker told police she had "caused obvious injuries" to her newborn and then hid the body in a trash can. The autopsy showed the baby was stabbed multiple times over the neck and chest.
Craker was transferred back to the Taylor County Jail on Tuesday following a 120-day stay at mental health facility in Vernon. Craker was sent there May 4 after a judge ruled she was incompetent to stand trial. At the end of the 120 days, another hearing was set to see if she regained competency.
Judge John Weeks signed a court order July 29 to have Craker transferred back to Abilene. The transfer took place Tuesday, the same day her trial was set. She was ruled competent to stand trial.
Her bond is set at $250,000.
Craker's boyfriend, Damian Cate, is also charged with the baby's murder. He was released in May after paying a reduced $50,000 bond.
