War Hawks eager to work new talent as season begins
ABILENE, Texas - Thursday marked opening day for the McMurry War Hawk football program, which is about to take part in its final season of transition to full-time DIII status.
And with each year under Coach Lance Hinson, the team remains focuses on continuing the process.
That being growth, as at Wilford Moore Stadium, coach Hinson's players were fired up on day one, coming off a 4-5 campaign but welcoming in a host of new faces.
On the coaching staff, Hinson's longtime friend Jeff Hancock joins the program this year as the offensive coordinator, a role Hinson is excited for knowing the tight-knit bond the two share.
Defensively, the War Hawks will be anchored by senior veterans Jordan Washington (DB) and Jacob Ferguson (LB). The defense was McMurry's strongest element in 2016, and it can only go up from here.
New for this season, is the offensive game plan. Coach Hancock will bring in a faster-tempo, no-huddle elements, and schemes to the offensive mindset. It's an area that will hopefully boost a younger group that struggled to score points in a few games last season.
But on day one, the excitement mainly revolves around the new generation of McMurry War Hawks with kickoff coming at the end of the month.
"Seeing all the new guys come in," smiled senior and former AHS lineman Brycen Homer. "We had new freshman on the offensive line and it really hit me like hey, these are the guys that are going to be taking my spot eventually."
"You're always excited to get out there and see the guys that you put so much effort in recruiting to come to Abilene, see what they do with the guys that you've trained so hard -- put that all together and we have 21 days before kick-off so the sense of urgency is here though," added head coach Lance Hinson.
The War Hawks will have 19 more practices over the next three weeks leading up to the first day of classes and the 2017 season opener. McMurry opens the season on the road at Oklahoma Panhandle on Thurs. August 31. The home opener at Wilford Moore Stadium is set for Sept. 16 against Howard Payne.
