ABILENE, Texas - Tyrees Whitfield didn't have a lot of chances to run against Lubbock High. He didn't need many.

The Cooper senior scored four touchdowns on just eight carries in the Cougars' 62-7 win last week.

"We certainly knew he was going to have a break-out year, and the statistics were probably going to go a certain direction," head coach Todd Moebes said.

Whitfield split the workload with Devin Johnson the past two seasons, but now as the main running back he's shined, accumulating 1,200 yards and 24 touchdowns.

"You can't say he's going to have 20 touchdowns, or something like that, but we knew he was going to be able to be effective on the ground which he has been."

Whitfield was named the KTXS/Abilene Teachers' Federal Credit Union Player of the Week for his seven-touchdown performance against Abilene High in September.

Cooper plays at winless San Angelo Lake View on Friday night at 7:30.
