Wildcat football focused on new goals in first conference road game

ABILENE, Texas - ACU Football comes off its first loss inside Anthony Field with a new focus entering week 5 as the Wildcats hit the road on Saturday to face Incarnate Word.

Last weekend, ACU's early lead evaporated against Stephen F. Austin, with four turnovers and key penalties making the difference.

The Wildcats' second-ranked secondary held SFA to under its 256 yard average its given up, but the Jacks nearly put up 200 yards rushing in a 10 point win. But it also seemed like something else was missing.

"It just seems like there was an emotional letdown which is hard to understand for me after winning just one game," said head coach Adam Dorrel on Wednesday." "We might have stayed in that 'feel good' zone too long and its something we've got to learn from."

Looking ahead now to Incarnate Word Saturday, a chance to fix some of those issues and get the juice back on a team that isn't out of anything yet. Head coach Adam Dorrel explained the need to simplify things a bit in terms of his players' responsibility.

"We feel like guys are pressing and trying to do too much - more than they need to do," he said. "That's a sign of competitiveness which is what you want, but you also have to be smart about it. So it's about getting the guys to focus on doing their job, and believing that if the guy next to them does theirs, then we'll be able to move the football."

But also, this week marks another chance in getting a goal accomplished for this new team - getting the program's first road win since 2014.

"And that's a big battle cry for us right now to try and be road dogs and go on the road and get a 'w' which hasn't been done since '14," explained Dorrel. "So our guys are excited about that and it's something that we can check a box this year and say many we got a road win.

Saturday's kick-off at UIW is set for 6 p.m.
