14,000 phone books collected during Abilene recycling contest

ABILENE, Texas - More than 14,000 phone books were recycled as part of a city of Abilene contest.

Reagan Elementary School, which collected 4,652 books, will receive a $100 award from Keep Abilene Beautiful.

The 2014 Project Re-Directory Phone Book Recycling Contest involved 14 local elementary, early childhood and Head Start campuses.

"The objective of the contest is to encourage and educate youth about the importance of conservation and preservation of valuable landfill space through collection and recycling of old or unused phone books," a city of Abilene news release said.

Project Re-Directory would not be possible without the assistance of the City of Abilene's Environmental Recycling Center and TXU Energy, the release said.
