2 Abilene men killed in head-on Hwy 36 crash in Callahan County


ABILENE, Texas - Two Abilene men died late Saturday, the result of a two-vehicle crash on Hwy 36, five miles east of Abilene in Callahan County.

Killed were Billy Darwin Kilpatrick, 61, and Gary Lee Scruggs, 53, according to the Department of Public Safety.

The accident occurred just after 10 p.m. on a wet road.

Kilpartrick was pronounced dead at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene. Scruggs was pronounced dead at the scene.

Injured in the crash with a "serious/incapacitating injury" was Gaila Angel Kilpatrick, a 58-year-old Abilene woman who was taken to Hendrick Medical Center. She was a passenger in 2009 Ford pickup driven by Billy Darwin Kilpatrick, DPS said.

According to DPS, Billy Darwin Kilpatrick's vehicle struck a guard rail on the north side of Hwy 36 and then struck Scruggs' 2005 Dodge pickup head on.

Multiple vehicles were involved in a crash Saturday night on Highway 36 southeast of Abilene.

Texas Department of Public Safety officials gave limited information to a KTXS crew at the scene, but multiple ambulances were dispatched to the location.

Officials said the crash happened around 11 p.m. about 1.5 miles south of FM 1750 on Hwy 36. The roadway was shut down Saturday night while crews worked the scene.

It is unknown at this time if any occupants were injured or killed in the crash. DPS officials said additional information would be released at a later time.
