ABILENE, Texas -- Six people have been displaced -- and the Red Cross has been notified -- after a Thursday morning fire in south Abilene.

Firefighters found heavy smoke and flames when they arrived around 6 a.m. at the single-story home in the 1800 block of South Jackson Street.

According to an Abilene Fire Department news release, the fire was contained to the structure’s attic space.

Damage was estimated at $10,000.

The cause of the fire has been ruled accidental and has been attributed to the “electrical systems of the structure,” the release said.

Meanwhile, another fire occurred just after 10:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 800 block of Comanche Trail near Lake Fort Phantom.

Firefighters also found heavy smoke and flames coming from that single-story structure and were able to contain it to the laundry room.

Damage was estimated at $5,000.

The fire's cause remains under investigation.
