ABILENE, Texas - An ordinance to ban texting and driving in Abilene is now moving forward with the Abilene City Council.

Police Chief Stan Standridge presented an ordinance at Thursday's meeting that would ban texting, or similar written communication, on a device while behind the wheel.

Council voted to move the matter on to a final reading, scheduled for the June 23 meeting. That reading will include a public hearing on the matter.

If passed, the ordinance would carry a fine of up to $500 for offenders.
