ABILENE, TX - High School football is rapidly approaching, and opening weekend will feature some West Texas staples in the 16th annual Action Zone Champions Classic at Shotwell.

The first game kicks off at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 25th between Hamlin and Anson. Friday's match-up features Abilene's Cooper Cougars against Keller at 7:30 p.m. The final game in the Classic is a six man match-up between Abilene Christian and Weatherford Christian on Saturday, August 27th at 6 pm.

The Classic is promoted by the Abilene Sports Alliance, a committee under the Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau. The Sports Alliance was formed to increase the economic impact in the Abilene community through sporting events. One goal is to raise money for scholarships awarded each year to graduating seniors from each of the local high schools, thus, the Classic was born. A decade later the Classic is now their signature event.

To date $100,000 has been awarded in scholarships to high school graduates.

Players and fans from each area will pour into Abilene to see the games. The Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau (ACVB) estimates that $200,000 will be pumped into the Abilene economy because of the Classic. The ACVB and the Sport Alliance encourages the public to attend the games and cheer on local teams and support the event.

Champions Classic games are included in season tickets, prices vary by game at the gate.
