Driving& texting ban set for Thursday's Abilene council meeting
ABILENE, Texas - The possibility of banning texting and driving inside Abilene city limits is set to go before city council this Thursday.
A first reading of an ordinance that would ban the use of electronic devices for written communication while driving is scheduled for this week's meeting.
It would apply to doing things like texting, looking at apps or writing emails while behind the wheel.
The ordinance, presented by Abilene Police Chief Stan Standridge, would not ban the use of phones for talking.
According to agenda documents, city staff are not in favor of the ordinance.
They instead recommend a public awareness campaign that educates drivers against texting and driving, and leave the state act on banning texting.
This week's council meeting begins at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, at city hall.
