Firefighters battling 1,000 acre grass fire in Jones County
JONES COUNTY, Texas —
The Texas A&M Forest Service said the "335 Fire" burning between Hawley and Nugent is now 1,000 acres and 30% contained.
County Road 338 remains closed.
Firefighters are trying to keep the flames contained to west of FM 600.
One structure was destroyed. But the forest service could not say what type of structure.
The grass fire, which started just east of Hawley on FM 1226, was first reported at 2 p.m. Friday.
High winds spread the fire east to FM 600 and CR 338.
A volunteer firefighter told homeowners to keep a close eye on the situation and be ready to evacuate just in case.
Some homeowners along CR 338 were evacuated. Others voluntarily evacuated.
